In January 2002, Congress passed the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001. The purpose of this brochure is to inform you about this Federal law and the process of “public school choice” and “supplemental educational services.”
This law requires districts to adopt grade-level standards, use the most effective methods and instructional strategies for teaching children, and assess their progress each year as mandated by the State. Schools that did not make “adequate yearly progress (AYP)” on the STAR test for two consecutive years are identified as “Program Improvement” schools by the California Department of Education.
Once a school has been identified, the district is required by law to provide parents with several options to assist their students academically. The first of these options is called School Choice. The second option is called Supplemental Educational Services.
Supplemental Education Services (SES) are available to the following students:
-
Attend a Program Improvement School (Year 2 to 5+) school
-
Qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch
-
CST results are BELOW BASIC or FAR BELOW BASIC in English Language Arts (ELA) or Mathematics
Parents/guardians of students who are at the Below Basic/Far Below Basic levels in math or ELA, will receive a parent notification letter to apply for SES. The parent/guardian has the sole responsibility for the selection of the service provider. All applications must be returned to the school site no later than Friday, September 17, 2010.
