Message from the Superintendent

Dear OMSD Families,

Can you believe we have already been back to school for three weeks? 

I am pleased to report that the start of school this year went very smoothly.  Thanks to a great deal of hard work on the part of our employees over the summer, our schools and classrooms were spruced up, ready, and waiting when students arrived on the first day of school.

On behalf of our Board of Trustees and all our employees, I want to thank students and parents for being on time, and for abiding by all the safety rules at and around our schools. 

Like you, I am excited about the new school year.  STAR test scores were sent home recently and more of our students' scores were in the Proficient and Advanced categories than ever before.  The state will officially release API scores for schools and districts in early September, based on preliminary information, we are expecting very positive results.  This school year will no doubt build on that success.

I look forward to greeting parents, staff, and students as I visit schools, classrooms, and attend school events.

 Annual Leadership Institute a Success for Students

The Linda Vista Full Service Community Center hosted this year's Annual Leadership Institute.  Thanks to all who attended the week long training. It is always encouraging to see so many adults from our community coming together in support of children.

Institute attendees heard dynamic guest speakers, discovered tools to help support their leadership skills, and had an opportunity to build strong relationships with fellow community members.

At their regular meeting on August 25th, the Board of Trustees recognized Buena Vista Arts-integrated Magnet School and Elderberry Elementary School for receiving the 2010-2011 Title I Academic Achievement Award.

To earn this prestigious award, a school must have achieved twice the school-wide Academic Performance Index (API) growth target on all significant sub-group targets.  This is not an easily earned award.  Thank you to the Buena Vista Arts-integrated Magnet School and Elderberry Elementary School communities for being a part of providing a world-class education to our students.

The Board of Trustees also extended congratulations to Elderberry, Howard, and Lehigh Elementary Schools for receiving the Education Excellence 2010 Honor Roll Award.  These three outstanding schools were recognized by the California Business Community for having demonstrated consistent high student academic achievement and making significant progress toward closing achievement gaps among all their students.  As superintendent, I am extremely proud of the students, parents, and staff of these terrific schools.
 

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Mr. Phil Hillman.  

With 22 years of service in school district finance, Phil will serve as OMSD's new Chief Financial Officer.  Previously, Phil was a school business consultant with a CPA firm and worked in the business office of three school districts.

In these challenging financial times, it is great to have the leadership and experience that Phil brings to our district.

Ontario-Montclair School Employees Federal Credit Union

The Ontario-Montclair School Employees Federal Credit Union (OMSEFCU) was founded in 1961 to serve OMSD and has maintained a long-standing partnership with the school district. The Credit Union has made a positive difference in the lives of OMSD employees, their family members, and retirees, as well as OMSD students through their many outreach programs.

                                                          Feed the Children
Thanks to a generous donation from a non-profit organization, Feed the Children, our district will receive 1,920 backpacks filled with school supplies and books for our students.  These backpacks and supplies are valued at $38,400.  Because of great partners like Feed the Children, OMSD students, who may not have the resources to obtain these supplies, will have the tools needed for success.

Estimadas familias de OMSD,

¿Pueden creer que ya hemos estado en clases por tres semanas? 

Me complace informarles que el comienzo de la escuela este año fue muy tranquilo.  Gracias en gran parte al arduo trabajo de nuestros empleados durante el verano, nuestras escuelas y aulas fueron acicaladas y preparadas, en espera de la llegada de los estudiantes el primer dia de clases.

A nombre de nuestra Junta Directiva y de todos nuestros empleados, yo quiero agradecer a los estudiantes y padres por ser puntuales, y por cumplir con todas las reglas de seguridad en y alrededor de nuestras escuelas. 

Como ustedes, yo estoy entusiasmado con el nuevo año escolar.  Los resultados del examen STAR fueron enviados a casa recientemente y mucho más que antes las calificaciones de nuestros estudiantes estuvieron en las categorías de Competente y Avanzado.  El estado dará a conocer oficialmente las calificaciones API para escuelas y distritos a principios de septiembre, basándose en información preliminar, nosotros esperamos resultados muy positivos. Este año indudablemente tomará la pauta de ese éxito.

Espero saludar a los padres, empleados, y estudiantes cuando visite las escuelas, clases y asista a eventos escolares.

 El Instituto anual de lierazgo un éxito para los estudiantes 

El centro comunitario de servicio completo Linda Vista patrocinó este año el Instituto anual de liderazgo.  Gracias a todos quienes asistieron a la larga semana de capacitación.  Es siempre muy estimulante ver a tantos adultos de nuestra comunidad unidos para apoyar a los niños.

Los asistentes al instituto escucharon a oradores invitados muy dinámicos, descubrieron herramientas para apoyar sus habilidades de liderazgo, y tuvieron oportunidad de formar relaciones sólidas con miembros de la comunidad.

En su junta regular del 25 de agosto, La Mesa Directiva homenajeó a la Escuela Magnet de Artes Integradas Buena Vista  y a la Escuela Primaria Elderberry por recibir la Condecoración de rendimiento académico Título I  2010-2011.

Para obtener este prestigioso mérito, una escuela debe lograr dos veces la meta de Rendimiento académico (API) en todos los objetivos de los subgrupos significantes.  Este no es un mérito muy fácil de lograr.  Gracias a las comunidades de la Escuela Magnet de Artes Integradas Buena Vista y a la Escuela Primaria Elderberry por proveer una educación de calidad mundial para nuestros estudiantes.

La Mesa Directiva también felicitó a las Escuelas Primarias Elderberry, Howard, y Lehigh por recibir Ia Condecoración de Excelencia en la lista de honor 2010.  Estas tres escuelas fueron homenajeadas por la Comunidad de empresas de negocios de California por haber demostrado persistentemente un alto rendimiento académico estudiantil y lograr progreso académico significativo para reducir las diferencias de rendimiento entre todos sus estudiantes.  Como superintendente, yo me siento sumamente orgulloso de los estudiantes, padres y empleados de estas estupendas escuelas.

 Bienvenido Phil Hillman

Por favor únanseme para dar una cordial bienvenida al Sr. Phil Hillman.   

Quien tiene 22 años de experiencia en el campo de las finanzas de distritos escolares, Phil ocupará el nuevo puesto de Director financiero de OMSD.

Previamente, Phil era consultante de finanzas escolares con una empresa de contadores públicos certificados (CPA) y trabajo en departamentos de finanzas de tres distritos escolares.

En estos tiempos económicos difíciles es bueno tener el liderazgo y la experiencia que Phil trae a nuestro distrito.

La cooperativa de crédito de empleados del Distrito Escolar de Ontario-Montclair (OMSEFCU) fue fundada en 1961 para dar servicios a OMSD y ha mantenido una larga colaboración con el distrito escolar.  La cooperativa de crédito ha hecho una diferencia positiva en las vidas de empleados, sus familiares, y empleados jubilados de OMSD, así como también en los estudiantes de OMSD mediante sus muchos programas de alcance comunitario.

                                                            Feed the Children 

Gracias a una generosa donación de una organización no lucrativa, "Feed the Children", nuestro distrito recibirá 1,920 mochilas llenas de útiles escolares y libros para nuestros estudiantes. 

 Estas mochilas y útiles escolares están valorados en $38,400.  Por el hecho de tener a grandes socios como "Feed the Children", los estudiantes de OMSD, quienes quizás no tengan los recursos para obtener estos útiles escolares, ahora tendrán las herramientas necesarias para el éxito.
