Helping the HungryUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Berlyn students and families really made a difference. They donated 1,022 canned and packaged food items during our food drive to Hope Partners’ SOVA food bank! That’s over 1,000 pounds of food that will help people who really need it! Everyone pitched in. Student Mediators and Student Council made posters. Every class collected food items. The Student Council reps tallied classroom totals. And, the primary and upper grade classes with the most food items donated were given a popcorn party for their efforts. The following day, 4th grade student Danielle, her mother, grandparents, and teacher Mrs. Archibald-Woodward, walked the 5K Walk for the Hungry to support the cause. A couple of weeks later, Danielle, her grandmother, Kirter, Andrew, Arely, Brandon, and their teacher toured and volunteered at the SOVA food pantry. The teacher stated, “I want the students to understand how they can help others and learn that being generous benefits everyone.”

Red Ribbon DayUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Berlyn students showed unity in their stance against drugs on Friday, October 28, 2011 during National Red Ribbon Week.  All students wearing red were invited to help form the “anti/against/no” symbol on the playground blacktop.  Mrs. Bartholomew’s 5th graders started the circle, with the rest of the classes joining in to complete the ring.  The morning kinder students, as well as Mrs. Patrick’s first graders, formed the line through the middle. What a great way to end the week that started with a pledge from all students to be drug-free!

Breaking the Guiness World Record...Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Picture

Berlyn Students supported Michelle Obama’s goal of trying to break the Guiness Book World Record of the most jumping jacks in a 24 hour period. People from all over the world participated in this event to promote physical fitness. On October 11th, over 20 parent volunteers helped with official time keeping, supervising, and doing an official count as 1st – 6th grade students jumped for one minute without stopping. Excitement is still in the air as we wait to see if the record was actually broken.

Berlyn Students Walk for a Good CauseUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Students at Berlyn Elementary displayed their spirit and enthusiasm during a school wide Walk-A-Thon on Monday, August 29, 2011.  In a joint effort between the school  and district PE staff, a course was set for the students, complete with lap markers, music and several “spray stations” to cool the children off as they made their way around the track. Each student hoped for a chance to complete the most number of laps for their grade level and win two movie tickets.  Classes began their session with a warm-up, walked the track, and then completed it with a cool down, followed by a refreshing water bottle and fruit snacks.  As a show of support, many of Berlyn’s teachers chose to participate along with their students.  Pledges and donations from family and friends of students brought in  over $2000 to help fund special events for the year.  Any student raising over $20 was awarded an event baseball cap, and the top four fundraisers will be attending a Lakers game at the Citizen’s Bank Arena with principal, Michelle Singer, in October.
