Yes! Del Norte Kicked-Off STAR testing season with our annual assembly in April. The motivational event started off with an all-staff Flash Mob which showed the students how teamwork and collaboration create positive results.  Encouraging messages such as “Concentrate!” “You’ve practiced all year, now you can do it!” “Do your best!” “Stay positive!”were shared from the STAR performances by the Kindergarten students and teachers, a Hip-Hop and 50’s Jive Teacher Duo, a dance crew from our ThinkTogether program, and a finally with Salsa Dancing. Led by Diana Rubio Lopez, “Celebrity” Data Coach, Angela Robbins and Benjamin Fudge, “Production Managers” Administrators, it was a “High-Scoring” event which inspired our students to shine on the STAR 2012!

Del Norte Students Tantalize their Taste Buds with "Harvest of the Month"Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Studies show that healthy eating and daily physical activity have a profound impact on the body and mind by improving the ability to learn and comprehend; by boosting energy, improving school attendance, improving test scores, changing attitudes, behavior, and more. Network for a Healthy California-San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools began implementing the Harvest of the Month program at Del Norte Elementary school in August for the 2011-2012 school year. Each month, students receive samples of locally grown produce to taste test. For many students, it is the first time they are given the opportunity to taste unique produce items such as kale, kiwifruit, broccoli, and grapefruit. In addition to the produce, the Network for a Healthy California provides educational materials and resources to support the produce tasting, such as standards-based student workbooks, literature books, activity sheets, and equipment to conduct recipe demonstrations in the classroom.
 
In March, 2012, state representatives of the Harvest of the Month program conducted a site visit at Del Norte Elementary School. The representatives observed teachers and students in almost every classroom engaged in learning about kale and swiss chard. The lessons conducted were linked to math, language arts, and science standards. Students from the Think Together afterschool program presented information about what they have learned from Harvest of the Month, and created a healthy veggie wrap for the visitors to taste. Del Norte received excellent reviews from the state, in a follow-up note, they wrote: “It was such an impressive event put on by your school! Your teachers engaged and involved the students with such passion it was truly amazing to see. Thank you again for being such a great host. This is a first site visit I will never forget.”

Congratulations to Del Norte Principal Angela Robbins-Maestas Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Ms. Robbins-Maestas was named  one of 13 “Women of the Year” for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Los Angeles County Commission for Women.  Principal Robbins-Maestas received the award on Monday, March 12, 2012 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.  Many supporters were in the audience to celebrate this wonderful achievement.

Del Norte Students Participate in Local 5K EventUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
On December 10, 2011, students from Del Norte’s  Think Together program along with other OMSD students participated at the City of Ontario’s 5K run/walk at Citizens Business Bank Arena.  It was a sunny cold morning, but the excited participants from the local fire station #1, Mayor Pro Tem Debra Dorst-Porada, and the Ontario Police Department supported our students and Think Together participants.  Del Norte student Dennis Leon received 2nd place in his age division and got to take home a beautiful medal to honor the athletic endeavor!

Everyone had a great time, and at the end of the race had bananas, oranges, and lots of water to mark the finish of a great running event supporting our Think Together programs.

Congratulations to Kelly Albers and her 3rd grade class!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Her class won Second Grand prize in the Art and Environmental Science competition from the San Bernardino County Museum. Their prize is a FREE Museum on the Road program.  These students worked hard writing and illustrating their project about Mono Lake.
 
Letters will be sent home with the students, inviting their families to attend the competition awards ceremony at the annual Wildlife Art Festival this Saturday. The ceremony is at 2:00 and winning students and their families are invited guests, free of admission costs.   This event is open to the public and I’m sure Kelly and her students would be further honored by the attendance of any who can attend.

Apples are the "Harvest of the Month" at Del Norte SchoolUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Del Norte Elementary School receives a delivery every month of fresh produce for students.    Del Norte was selected as one of four schools in the county to participate in “HARVEST OF THE MONTH”  for the 2011-2012 school year.  The program includes nutritional information, facts on science, math, and lessons to help our students learn about the produce, and the healthy steps needed to make good nutrition a priority.  Del Norte was recognized last year as a Silver Medalist for Sports and Wellness by the Governor’s Council and this new program fits into one of the school’s goals of healthy nutrition to help healthy minds. 
 
This month on September 28th, granny smith apples were delivered for every student - totaling almost 800 hundred apples!!!  The apples were distributed, classrooms did activities related to the fruit and the kids love it!  Last month's produce was grapes.  All products are grown right here in the San Bernardino area bylocal farmers. 
 
The most amazing part of this program is all the produce, support from Ms. Northcott, materials, nutritional training (Spanish/English) for parents and staff, and lesson guide books are provided completely free of cost to the school.

El Distrito Escolar de Ontario-Montclair saluda y celebra a los estudiantes “Estrellas Brillantes” quienes lograron obtener calificaciones perfectas en el examen “STAR” la primavera del 2011. ¡Felicidades!
