Marvelous Turn Out for Mariposa’s Family Math NightUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
On April 26, 2012 about 300 students and parents attended our annual Family Math Night where they learned and played several math games.  Our incredible teachers spent extra time planning and preparing for this great family event.  Not only did our staff work hard to provide this great experience, we also had a wonderful team of parents that helped prepare all of the materials needed for the games. We had sessions devoted to kindergarten games, primary games and upper grade games.  Students and parents played games that focused on the following math skills: comparing numbers, money, time, multiplication facts, probability, fractions, factoring, mental math and tangrams.  All families were given a deck of cards for door prizes and learned several fun card games that focused on practicing math skills.    We were honored to have a special guest, Kristin Brake, one of OMSD’s Board of Trustees, attend our event.   Additionally, Ellen Lugo, Director I East Learning Region joined us for fun and games.  There were several prize drawings and prize winners took home flashcards, games, school supplies, etc.  All in all… Mariposa’s Annual Family Math Night was a HUGE success!  Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped prepare for the evening and to the Mariposa Staff for providing a wonderful event for our families!

Assembly member Norma Torres Visits 6th Grade students at MariposaUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Inspired and motivated are the two words that best describe the way the 6th grade students in Mrs. Browning’s Math class felt after hearing Assembly member Norma Torres speak to them on Friday February 3rd.  Mrs. Torres, who represents District 61 and is the former mayor of Pomona, took time out of her very busy schedule to speak with the students about the value of education and the opportunities it will create for them.  Her talk was personal and informal which kept the students glued to her every word for about an hour.  The students used this opportunity to ask Mrs. Torres about her involvement in politics. She told the kids that it is not easy, but the only way things will change is by becoming involved and educated.  Her journey began many years ago when she worked as a 911 Operator in Pomona and felt the need to change hiring practices to include being bilingual as a requirement.   “You need an education so that when you are ready for the workforce you can have choices and get paid from the ‘neck up’.”  She explained that the more education they have, the more opportunities they will have to choose to work in the things that interest them.

Mariposa Students Learn the Importance of Water Conservation and have a Little Fun in the ProcessUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
On October 11, Mariposa students were treated to an educational and entertaining opportunity to learn about water conservation through the Water Pirates of Neverland:  Search for the Great Green Octopus.  This action packed and engaging presentation used Captain Doorknob and Squishy, the green octopus, to discover ways that we waste water and understand ways in which students can work with their parents in saving water.  Pierre Cleauseau added to the excitement as he chased Tinker Fred down through the audience.  Students discovered that only 1% of our earth’s water is in lakes, streams, and rivers.  Graphs were shown to indicate the percentage of water in our bodies - much to the students’ delight.  Professional actors presented this show through a partnership with the City of Ontario and the Inland Empire Utilities Agency.
