A Little "TLC" for Sultana StudentsUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Sultana Elementary School takes pride in providing differentiated instruction for all learners.  Parent advisory groups have shared how they value students receiving the tools needed to be successful learners. The Learning Center (TLC) is one avenue through which this is accomplished.  Inspired by a successful literacy intervention program observed at another school, staff decided to implement their own “center model” at the start of the 2010-11 school year.  All Sultana students reading below grade level are assessed three times a year.  Those students in grades K through 3 who are identified as needing the most intensive reading help are then assigned to a TLC group.  Students in these groups come to TLC four times a week for 30-45 minutes each day and are placed in a small group of five students.  With four instructional aides staffing TLC, staff is able to work with 20 students per grade level providing intensive reading intervention using research-based programs and strategies designed to help students make gains in their reading proficiency.  As third grader Jonathan stated, coming to TLC “helps you learn better, it helps you read higher, it helps you to be a good reader.  I like that in our small group we work like a team.”

OMSD Parents are "INSPIRE"dUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Parents from Sultana Elementary and other surrounding schools participated in a series of classes called Project INSPIRE.  Project INSPIRE aims to teach parents how to create a positive learning environment in the home and how to engage, motivate, and support their children’s success in school, while also training parents to engage other parents to become actively involved as leaders in school reform and improvement.  A group of over 20 parents graduated from the second module of these classes on December 20th.  Parents were presented with gifts and certificates from Mrs. Lizette Diaz (principal), Mr. Hector Macias (executive director of Student and Family Support Services) and Mrs. Marissa Lazo-Necco (San Bernardino County Parent Program Specialist).  Congratulations, parents!!
