On February 21st, class representatives at Bon View Elementary participated in a school-wide spelling bee.  Students who participated in the school-wide bee shined as star spellers in their classrooms by competing in a class bee the previous week.  At the school-wide bee, students competed against top spellers in all classes. There were two spelling competitions held.  Students in grades one and two competed against one another for a first, second, and third place trophy.  In the second competition, students in grades three through six competed for a first through third place trophy, the champion title, and the opportunity to represent Bon View at both the district and regional spelling bees.

Our first place winner in our primary grade competition was Farmah Jallow  Runner up was Chloe Gilwood.  When asked how she prepared for this competition, Farmah stated that her mom and dad helped her to get ready.  “My students worked hard to prepare for this event,” said Mrs. Rodenbaugh, Farmah’s first grade teacher.  “I’m so excited that she won.”

In our third through sixth grade competition, Sergio Rios emerged as our spelling bee champion followed by Ricardo Soto who achieved runner up.  Sergio will continue on to the district spelling bee to be held on March 3, 2012 at Vernon Middle School.  He will also represent Bon View at the regional bee to be held at Mt. Sac on March 17th.  “He loves words,” said Mrs. Bolden, Sergio’s sixth grade teacher.  “I’m so proud of him.”

Mrs. Bennett, principal of Bon View Elementary also showed her support of our spelling representatives.  “We are very proud of what they have accomplished today.  It is not easy to stand in front of a live audience and spell challenging words.  Our students’ skill and bravery are commendable.”

Bon View is proud to announce several students who won at the district-wide science fair which was held on Saturday, February 4th at Oaks Middle School.  District winners from Bon View include Amber Joyce, Trenton Willett, Roselyn Gonzaelz, Richard Camarillo, Kiani Solis, Samantha Martin, Jennifer Zamudio, Anelisa Gonzalez, and Garrett Gayle. Mrs. Viramontes’ third grade class project also won in the class projects category. Individual district winners will be advancing to the county level!

Bon View’s site science fair was held on Thursday, January 26th. That evening, families gathered to view finalists’ projects from all grade levels.  Students have been working diligently for the last several months investigating scientific questions to test their hypotheses.  Site projects were judged at the classroom level, and classroom winners advanced for final judging.  Winners were announced and received ribbons, trophies, and cash prizes with the help of our PTO’s donations.

We are very proud of all of our participants and winners! Science is a priority at Bon View School, and students are learning to be inquirers, which fits in with our goal to become an International Baccalaureate World School. Way to go, Bon View Scientists!
