De Anza Promise Scholars Visit the University of La Verne

7th Grade Students at De Anza Middle School were selected for the unveiling the Ontario-Montclair School District’s Promise Scholars initiative. On March 9, over 200 students were able to visit the University of La Verne. They were lead through several small group sessions planning for their future with current ULV students, toured the campus, heard from a panel of ULV students about planning for college, special words from Superintendent Hammond, and an amazing Poetry Slam that had all the student mesmerized.

De Anza Students Participate in "WorkAbility" Field Trip

On March 13th, several De Anza students and teachers, in partnership with West End SELPA and the Workability Program, visited the Nong Shim Noodle Factory production facilities. During the fun tour, students learned how ramyun noodles were made, as well as what types of jobs were available within the company. The Mission of the WorkAbility Program is "to promote the involvement of key stakeholders including students, families, educators, employers and other agencies in planning and implementing an array of services that will culminate in successful student transition to employment, lifelong learning and quality of life."

De Anza AVID Students Visit UC Riverside

On November 10, 2011, AVID students from De Anza Middle School embarked on an educational fieldtrip to the University of California, Riverside. Upon arrival, students were greeted by their guides and then escorted to a welcoming orientation where they learned what it takes to become a UCR student, how to succeed in college, and also the cost associated with college life. The AVID students were very attentive, taking notes, and asking engaging questions about university life. Students were then taken on a guided tour where they learned the history of the school as well as the different school fields that reside at UCR. They also had the opportunity to interview and interact with UCR students. All and all, it was a wonderful time for our AVID students. College Readiness doesn't begin in High School, but it a major objective for the AVID program. Our De Anza AVID students are getting early exposure to UC admissions requirements and a feel for the campus.
