| A team of three Vineyard STEM Magnet School 8th graders beat out teams from Orange County, San Diego, and the Imperial Valley to win a first place trophy in the MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement) Regional Competition on Saturday, April 21st. Amber Edmondson, Diane Javier, and Odalys Cardenas earned first place in the Team Math Quest (Algebra/Geometry) competition in the University of California-Riverside Area Competition held in February and went on to represent the UCR area in the Regional Competition against schools from all over Southern California. The girls spent many hours studying for the competition with the help of their math teacher, Miss Ferrer and 7th grade math teacher, Mr. Ku. We are very excited about this awesome accomplishment and we will proudly display their 1st place trophy in the front office for years to come. | | Created: 4/27/2012 9:51 AM | |

| Twenty-one Vineyard Explorers participated in the University of California, Riverside MESA Day competition on Saturday, February 25th. MESA stands for Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement and the MESA Day competition allows several middle schools in the Inland Empire to compete against one another through STEM related projects. Students have been working hard in their MESA elective to create egg drop containers, mousetrap cars, popsicle stick bridges, balsa wood gliders, and “I Love MESA” videos in preparation for this competition. Three teams of Vineyard students also competed in the Team Math Quest Challenge in the areas of Pre-Algebra and Algebra/Geometry. We were awarded with 1st and 2nd place medals in the video production category, 1st place in the Team Math Challenge (Algebra and Geometry), and 4th place in the egg drop competition. Both the math team and the egg drop winners will move on to compete in the Regional MESA Day competition on Saturday, April 21st. We are very proud of our students and their teacher, Miss Ferrer, for their hard work and awesome achievement! | | Created: 3/30/2012 10:49 AM | |

Star gazing families swarmed to Vineyard’s STEM Magnet School on Friday, January 27th in search of science related activities and a night filled with fun. The evening kicked off with the school’s Science Fair where hundreds of student projects were displayed and winning projects were awarded medals, ribbons, and a spot in the upcoming district Science Fair. Directly following the Science Fair, families proceeded to the annual Star Gazing Event where participants peered through telescopes into the clear night sky, shot Alka-Seltzer rockets into the air, viewed planetarium shows in the Star Labs, and participated in many other space related activities. The event was made possible by the volunteer support of staff members and their families, parents, The Pomona Valley Amateur Astronomer’s Club, Interns from the University of California, Riverside, and ROTC students from Chaffey High School. We are thankful for the assistance of so many people who help us to provide such wonderful learning experiences for our students and their families!

| It’s not every day that a nuclear scientist, a flood control engineer, a recycling entrepreneur and an environmental engineer are teaching to middle-school students, but that was the case on Jan. 30 at Vineyard STEM School in Ontario. “I use math every single day with pretty much everything I do,” said J.D. Wang, president and CEO of reRubber, which engineers practical uses for recycled tires.
Wang was one of four presenters for the first Mathematics Day at Vineyard STEM, which is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics-magnet school for kindergarteners to eighth-graders in the Ontario-Montclair School District.
“These type of hands-on, quality presentations the students are experiencing today gets them excited about the classroom learning they are doing,” Vineyard Principal Keri Applegate said.
More than 150 middle-school aged students were able to spend an hour of class time with Wang; Joe Holland, a nuclear engineer with Advatech Pacific; Desirea Haggard, a chemical and environmental engineer, and Julia Lakes Martinez with CalPortland Company; and Ned Araujo with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
They all are presenters through the Applications by Business and Labor for Educators program through the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools’ Alliance For Education. The program strives to increase student interest in mathematics by providing secondary school students with opportunities to see how the subject relates to real-world applications.
In addition to the Mathematics Day presentations, there also was a $15,000 check presentation made by the Southern California Gas Co. to the Alliance for Education and The Community Foundation for STEM education. Robert Cruz and Kristine Scott of The Gas Company made the check presentation.
County Superintendent Gary Thomas said the hands-on experience for the students is invaluable. “Letting the students see these real-world applications to the learning that’s taking place in their classrooms hopefully will provide students with the spark they need to pursue careers and further education in math and science,” he said.

| Our first Magnet Academy of the year occurred on November 11th, the Veteran’s Day Holiday. While other students across the district were taking a day off of school, over 500 Vineyard K-8th grade students took scientific excursions to various area locations. Each field trip was geared towards the specific science content standards that students are currently studying in their classes. Kindergarteners and 7th grade students travelled to the California Science Center in Los Angeles to conduct experiments with slime (Kindergarten) and dissect cow eyes (7th). Second, fourth, and sixth grade students studied earth science at the Jurupa Mountain Discovery Center and brought home their own rock collections. The first grade students observed the many animals at the Santa Ana Zoo and learned about animal habitats. Third graders also travelled to Santa Ana and visited the Science Discovery Center where they explored all of the exhibits and watched a 4-D movie titled “Turtle Vision” about human impact of the environment. The 5th and 8th grade students went the furthest away to explore the Griffith Park Observatory. The students watched planetarium shows and explored all of the space exhibits. Some were able to pose for pictures with the Hollywood sign in the background and our students were even invited to join in on pictures with a newly married couple! What an incredible day of fun and learning that students won’t soon forget! A huge thank you to the 96 parent chaperones, Think Together staff members, and Vineyard teachers who accompanied the students on their various adventures! We couldn’t have done it without you! | | Created: 12/9/2011 2:56 PM | |
